Wow, you still have the original window sticker? That's amazing. So, you should know what all the upgrades from the factory and dealer options are. Asisde from buck tags and build date tags, that is a very important document.

thats the beauty of research on these old stangs, finding out what they came with is hard to tell, but if its showing black standard, with black standard seats, as the sane goes"the codes dont lie" my car came with a 8,000 tach, but i know it didnt from further research. People along the way like to change stuff out, and whos to say all that stuffs original ford parts. your best bet is to take off the woodgrain stuff and look for the FOMOCO stuff, if it has it, i too would wig the rest of the car out with pony interior. by the way are the door panels pony interior as well???

Questions on codes (below) and more on my almost-a-pony interior......original window sticker shows three factory options: power top, AM radio, whitesidewall tires. Purchase agreement document (bill of sale) shows nothing under "accessories." So I'll continue on my way to making it a pony interior. BTW, these 40-year-old documents are a hoot...I'm gonna scan them and make a collage along with pix of the car. I wonder if Dick Gordon Ford still exists in Redondo Beach CA (located right on the Pacific Coast Highway, no less).

Two questions: it looks like the date code on my car is June 1, 1966 (01F), which is also the day the purchase contract was signed; delivery looks like it was to be June 8. Method of delivery on the window sticker says "Convoy." Could they move a car through the distribution system from San Jose to LA that fast? Guess I gotta find an old-time Ford dealer.

Also, on the warranty number (the "serial number" part of the VIN), did Ford coordinate those numbers among the three assembly lines? (so you could really figure out if your 66 was the millionth mustang) Or does my number 208442 just mean it was the #108442 1966 mustang made at the San Jose plant? (they started numbering at 100001, right?)

Back then, it was not uncommon for these cars to be driven from the factory to the dealerships. Ads in the papers used to advertise for drivers. So, your brand spanking new Mustang already had mileage on it before you bought it. Still today, I doubt you can find a new mustang with zero miles on it.

Hey, I want that job. Driving a K code fastback cross country sounds like a good gig.

Most likely the K codes were shipped by truck. but the C codes could have been shipped by hired drivers. Who knows? At any rate, it would have been a good gig just to drive a new stang back then, and get paid for doing it. Free motel and meals too. I spent a few nights in a motel last summer, and the two guys in the room next to me were driving two Chevy trucks to a dealer in New Mexico. Not a bad gig if you want to be on the road all the time.

could you of imagined being the one having to drive new Pintos to a dealership.....no i agree it would be a great job to drive new Mustangs to dealerships, but im sure like all jobs, it gets old, nd to top it off, who knows if the drivers than, even cared about Mustangs. I really dont think everyone in the 60's thought the Mustang would be around 40 years later.

True. Back then, if a car had a hundred thousand miles on it, it was a junker to be picked up for a hundred bucks. No matter if it was a Mustang or not. And, those drivers who drove those pintos and c code Mustangs most likely thought noting more of driving them than a F-100 pick up truck.

This code stuff, and the way cars were equipped, is interesting. I've read plenty now to indicate changes were ongoing, that different assembly plants were working with different components at times, and figuring out what you have versus the next driver is part of the fun and why this forum exists. From April 64 to Aug 66, there were 1.2 million mustangs made with basically the same sheet metal. I arbitrarily decided mine is #1,000,000 off the line (to impress my wife and to ease the complaints when the UPS driver shows up with more stuff for the car)...which brings me back to my post about serial numbers, gta289, oh code guru (and coil wire puller)...I'm guessing Ford couldn't pick out that exact car either. Thoughts? Also, I read somewhere the Millionth Mustang model and ad campaign included only coupes, but I saw a post today on classicmustangs.com that said it was all three body styles. Did they put 6-bangers in the fastbacks? (wasn't the whole idea to conserve V8 engines for the GT and fastbacks).
