Calling all 65 owners
Let's get those engine bay colors correct. These engine bay colors were exclusive to the 65's so we gotta keep the tradition going.
Gold valve covers, gold air cleaner, and the odd loooking shorkel painted black. Black oil filler cap and dipstick too. The rest was black. Here is mine and some other guys. As she said. "show me yours."
However, do you notice he has a pipe coming off the air cleaner that is hooked to the oil filler cap? WTF is that? Mine goes from the PCV directly into the bottom of the carb. Was there some sort of design change at mid year, or is this not a 65?

The 70's mustangs had that Pcv hos too. If and when i rebuild my engine i will paint the block and accessories black, but will have Hipo Valve covers and air filter.

well glen, you very well may have a 66 air cleaner to be the bearer of bad news. 66 mustang air cleaners had that hose that came off the valve cover for "blow by" that was created in the engine, and Ford thought that if they could keep the circulation from one side of the engine to the other, and empty into the carb, it would result in the blowe by being burned off. It was kinda stupid if you ask me, but i really think its a 66 air cleaner. the only thing that trows me off is the snorkel, which on yours is the correct round type, as opposed to being square in 66 on up. Real quick glen, whats the consecutive numbers on you cars vin, i only ask because if its a later 65, that would answer your problem, because later cars, came off the line with soon to be next year year parts on them.....
You may be confused Joe. The first picture is mine. The second picture is another guys. 65's did not have that breather hose going to the oil cap. Mine was built in September of 64.
Mine was built in March of 65 and didnt have a pcv valve it had a draft tube. The plate under the carb had a valve sticking out of the back of it like a flapper. Im pretty sure it is original I bought it from the estate of the original owner. It did have a 66 replacement head on one side though.
I think I have it figured out. The tube that runs into the oil filler cap was used on the California smog control engines. So, if you bought it in California, or if it is a California car, then it had it, but not the rest of the country.
It might make you feel better to know I am thinking about painting the 351c in my 65 black this winter to match the intake I bought that was already done very nicely in black and seems like too much work to try and return to natural aluminum. Since people still look at my motor and think its a 289...maybe I can fool even more people if i paint if all black like stock
yeah glen thats the point i was trying to make with that hose going into the air cleaner. i do believe san jose cars recieved these add ons, however, like i said before, it may be a later 65. Yeah and sorry im color blind with reds, i couldnt make out the color of the two, but i guess if yours was yellow, and the other grey i should have added it up.....
