Breather Filter
Little costly, when you can get breather filters at AutoZone or Advance Auto for ~$15.
Not the small $7.99 ones, they got bigger ones like that, for $15 or so. Some have
chrome, and some have a hose fitting so you can keep the PVC line plugged in
to the breather.
Here are some examples of breathers with a hose fitting:



I would use that instead of a straight vent to atmosphere.
Non hose fitting breathers:

These are vented on the bottom.

What you smell are the crank case vapors, the combustion by-products, not the actual oil. It's a
gassy oily smell. It gets worse as the oil gets used more and and more, and saturates with fuel.
Cars used to be this way before Emissions controls. They didn't get oil all over the engine bay. Done
RIGHT, you will be fine.
