"Special Handling Package" question
Hi all,
I found a steering box on ebay for a '65 GT 16:1 ratio. There are 2 btw. After doing some research I am realizing my car HAS the quicker steering box!!! My question is if came with the quicker steering box would that have been part of the Special Handling Package? From what I can gather it would have been. Also I have read you could have got the handling package without getting the GT package. Anyone know for sure?
Thanks, Walt

as with all GT things to come about in 65-66, all the parts, fog lights, exhaust, even sterring and suspension components could to, in fact be ordered as a dealer "add on" you would have to pay the cost that normally would be free of charge on a GT vehicle. i have seen some 65-66 come with the thicker sway bar and quiker steering box, but no other Gt opponets. Ford did this during there "Total Performance" period, in hope that if you could dress up you Mustang with Special Handeling componets, you could drive it to the track, race it, and drive it home. I believe a quicker steering box cost about 28 bucks back then and the thicker sway bar was 13. hope this helps. and just to add it isnt rare for a car to have this just a little more uncommon!!
Hi,
So having the quicker steering does not mean that the springs, shocks and sway bar were also beefier? In other words you could get the quicker steering by itself?
Thanks, Walt

yes sir, all other components were seperate as i was saying, you were charged for all GT parts that did not come on your car. A real quick way to see if your car has harder springs, is to pop the wheel off of the front and take a look at the upper control arm (this is for 66's only for some reason) but if you car has a heavier spring, up by the ball joint there should be a stamp there saying either IA or CC dont know what they mean but have seen it only on true 66 GT cars. Keep in mind cars with A/C also had the stamping because they carried stiffer springs for the added weight, and will have that stamping also.
