Default Running car with H-pipe

Will running my 289 with just a h-pipe installed(just for the moment) mess up my engine? My dad said it will burn the valves.

How will that cause the valves to burn? Are you talking about an H pipe without the mufflers installed? Not sure what you are asking here. But, even if you run the engine straight off the manifold it won't cause the valves to burn.

I just took it around the block. It's so loud, I had to put in in neutral and coast most of the way.

What your dad probably meant was that you could warp your valves. As long as you have some sort of pipes on the motor you are safe. However, if you run it without pipes (manifolds only) you could warp the valves.

OK, I need an explanation here. How can running an engine without pipes "warp" the valves?
