Default 1986 gt transmission crises

I just bought a 1986 gt with a bad transmission but it came with a replacement transmission. My go to guy (husband) thought it would be as simple as taking out the old one and putting in the new one but after taking it out and realizing the new one isn't the same he can't help me. The transmission he took out of it says Ford omatic on the pan. The replacement one we was told is a c4 and it doesn't have a torque converter in it. How do I go about making this change or would I be better off ordering a rebuild kit and paying my neighbor to rebuild the one that came off my car

The replacment one that came with it

This is the one we took off

The trans that came out appears to be an AOD (automatic overdrive) a 4 speed. The C4 is a 3 speed trans with no overdrive. The C4 is a tough little guy much more so than the AOD but I doubt you are going to drag race the car. In that case the AOD can be rebuilt with much more ease than trying to get the C4 in there. Unless drag racing the c4 is a step back
