Confused about transmission rebuild
I have always known that replacing the torque converter on a rebuild of the tranny is what you do. In addition, I had my tranny on my F-150 replaced last summer, and the Ford tech highly recommended a new converter. SO, Yes.....replace it.
Generally upon transmission failure various bits and pieces will be in the fluid. This fluid often carries this junk into the torque converter where you CANNOT flush it back out. It may be that nothing actually harmful went in there, but how do you KNOW? You don't and can't. Therefore you must replace the converter with a new or rebuilt one. This is what all the transmission rebuild shops do as a matter of course. They won't guarantee a rebuild using your original converter. They know better. If you try it, it's a gamble. It might be just fine or it might well destroy all your rebuild work. Feel lucky? Is this something you want to gamble with? Personally I about hate swapping transmissions. Once one is out I will do to it whatever it takes to help ensure I don't have to pull it back out again. I REALLY hate that.
