OK all you Mustang gurus out there.......I need help trying to decode the data plate and engine casting numbers on a 1965 Mustang I just bought..I'm getting conflicting information from various web sources. VIN on the car is 5R07T245422....the VIN matches the equipment in the car which is the 200 engine, 3 speed manual. However, I don't think this is the original data plate that came on the car because if you look at the date code on the plate, it shows just "08" and no letter following that, so I think when the plate was made, they screwed it up. So, I can't really tell the built date of the car. So regarding the data plate (1) is this an original or a duplicate date plate? and (2) where can you find the build date of the car if the date on this plate is incorrect? Are there any sources out there that have VIN matching back to factory production dates? FYI, all the VIN's stamped on the body do match this VIN, which matches title of course, so no issues there.
Second mystery.....I do believe that the engine was replaced at some point because it's a blue engine block/valve cover/air cleaner combination on this vehicle. The code on the block is C6DE....OK, the sources say it's a 1966 motor, but the "D" says its a Falcon motor from the data I'm seeing. Is that true? Next series of castings are 6015-B, which the same sources says that 6015 is for the 289, which this clearly is not, so that's not correct....so, what dows the 6015-B mean on this engine? Lastly, there is a 7C8 casting on it, which is supposed to be the date the block was made. From looking at the decoding chart, it would say March 8, 1967, which doesn't make much sense with the C6DE casting number.
So, the online sources are confusing at best and I'm just trying to get to what the truth is here......any of you folks out there have a clue? I've attached pics of the data plate and the block casting numbers that I mention above for your review. Thanks for any help you can provide!
