Default Improvised voltage checker?

I have an ignition issue I am trying to resolve and need to check the voltage to the solenoid. I don't have a voltmeter at hand but just was thinking I can improvise one. I have an extra Amp gauge that I think I could attach leads to for a quick test. Tell me why I can't do this or why it won't work.
