Default alternator gauge dead

Hi, I searched the forum, hope this isn't repetitive...

But my alternator gauge doesn't work. Does anyone know the steps to take to see why? I know there's a voltage regulator that could be replaced, or the wires that actually connect to the gauge etc etc... But I dont know how to check whats causing the problem.. I know the parts are cheap so maybe its better to replace the regulator and/or wiring and cross my fingers?

THanks!!

The so-called ammeter in these cars was crap. They were passive indicators, wired in parallel. If you pop all the electrical connectors between the AMP gauge and the alternator, and clean the connectors with Brasso using Q-tips and toothbrush, then reconnect them coating the pins with dialectric silicone grease. This usually restores some function, and often quite a lot.
