Default 4-Lug to 5-lug Wheel Swap

Hey, All, I've been trying to research how to Swap all four Wheels from 4-lugs to 5-lugs. CJ Pony has kits available for this but those kits will only swap the front, not the rear. I know the make Adapters for this, but from what I've seen, heard, and read, they are not exactly the most safe or reliable. So does anybody know how to convert my rear 4-lug wheels to 5-lugs without an adapter?

Well unfortunately Mine is a 7.5" rear end. I've been looking at CJ's for a while but they only sell a couple things for a 7.5".

I'm thinking ill end up eventually swapping the rear end anyways because i want to turbocharge it at some point. Any Idea where I could get an 8" rear instead? CJ Pony doesn't sell them. They only sell 9".

You are going to need the whole axle assembly. Best bet is a salvage yard as buying a new one will be really expensive.

I was hoping you wouldn't say that.

Oh well. Its very unfortunate that they don't remake the 8" rear end and axle assemblies. If i can't get an 8" though, How would a 9" work for a 6 cyl? I know its overkill and would suck gas, but would it work or would it be to strong for the engine to turn?

I'm not sure if you appreciate how this swap would work. A 9" would definitely be overkill and would work just fine. Horsepower doesn't have anything to do with making it work. It's just a more robust gear set for higher horsepower cars. You can't just swap the pumpkin, you need the whole axle assembly. Even if you had an 8" axle assembly and pumpkin, you would still need 5 lug axles in place of the 4 lug. V8 Fox body Mustangs have the 8" axle assembly you are looking for but still have 4 lug axles unless you get a cobra set up which already has the 5 lug axles. You can shop Moser rear end assemblies assembled the way you want with the correct gear ratio but you are looking at $2500 at least. I don't know much about the 6 cylinder cars but I do believe the smaller 7" assembly can't be converted as you have already discovered. Call the guys at CJ or LMR and see what they recommend for your car. I was hoping someone else on here would have been in the same boat as you and have a better answer. I highly recommend going on Classicindustries.com and inputting your model year and car and you will find everything you need. They are my source for my 57 Chevy.

One thing you will learn about hot rodding and restoration real quick is that it's expensive, nothing is a bolt on, and one solution leads to another problem one right after another. It's fun.
