Default gas tank

How do you clean out the inside of a gas tank?

If it's gunked up, there are a few products that will loosen it up so you can pour the crap out of the sending unit hole, but what do you do with it when it's out? I understand you can also take it to a radiator shop and have it boiled out. IMHO, it's probably easier and mabe even cheaper just to replace it. I think it's $120 shipped from most places to get a standard sized tank with sending unit. If you're interested in higher capacity you can swap in one of the 22 gal ones from a later model stang.

Asuming you have it out of the car and all the gas drained from it, and that the sending unit is out, put in a bunch of small pebbles, or marbles or anything like that that will ***** off the rust and stuff. Rattle that around until your arms are about to fall off, then pour out as much of that as you can, and fill the tank with water, then pour that out, and do the rock thing again. Fill it with water and slosh it around again, then pour it out, and turn the tank on it's top down so as much water and gunk as can get out will. Then hook up the shop vac and suck out as much of anything left over as is possible.
If it were left up to me, I would just buy a new tank. They are cheap enough.

Just make sure you have a shop vac to completely get out all of the water and left over debris. As you know, water and gas don't mix. Also, if there was enough rust, you may have some pin holes in the tank. If that is the case, just replace the tank. Trying to patch a tank is not only dumb, it is dangerous. I also remember a company that offered a spray type rubber based stuff that you can spray the inside of the tank, but I don't remember who it is. Again, Charles, if it is too far gone, just replace the tank. Watcing the butt end of your Mustang explode, and the garage catch on fire will not be a pretty sight. Safety first.

Yep, they sure do. But, I wouldn't recommend it. That stuff costs almost as much as a new tank. http://www.por15.com/uploads/files/f...aler%20pdf.pdf

Replace the tank if it is in question. I had my 73 rust out on me.
