well, i have a 66' 289(which i got just before summer started, so i don't have much done)
i honestly don't have any mods(unless you count the new radiator, fuel pump, and spark plugs)
i believe the current carb is just stock(so whatever that is)
i really have no preference
i would like performance
forget about the cost most anything will be okay.

Are you looking for new or rebuilt? 2V or 4V? If you currently have a 2V and want to g 4V, I recommend the Edelbrock PErformer Series. THey offer the intake and carb for the 289. I would not go more than 650 CFM.

Unless you have, or are planning to have some serious mods under the carb, then just stick with the original equipment. If it is a 2v, then you need a new Motorcraft/autolite 2100. If it is a 4v, then you need a Motorcraft/autolite 4100. With a stock engine, 650 CFM is way too much.
Hi,
I recommend the autolite 4100 or if is a 2V the 2100. Try here for a great price. http://carburetorexchange.com/index.php The 4100 is around 250 and they will charge you 60 for not having a core. These prices are off the top of my head but I think there are close.
