Engine Swap Question?
Hi, i started fixing my 65 mustang 200 Ci inline 6 about a month ago, but it finally gave out (was in very poor condition). I am looking to get a 289 or a 302 but my question is, will it fit? will i have to modify the engine mounts, and what are some of the problems of doing this swap?. By the way i have a manual transmission. thanks in advance.
oh ya, now your talking. it's gonna take some work but it's worth it. The new engine should fit fine but you'll need a new bellhousing for the tranny. Also, get new engine mounts plus maybe a slightly heavier suspension in the front. You don't want the car to lean over to the side when the engine cranks over. um....new radiator might be a good idea if not necessary. thats all i can think of but im sure some of our more experienced guys can help you out
i know i have a 66' 289 under the hood now, but the VIN tells me that it used to be a strait 6, a previous owner did me a real favor i guess. so if it's like mine... which it is, it'll fit fine, and you'll still have a crap load of room too.

yes it'll fit no problem. i'm in the process of doing the same swap w/ my 67, but i'm restoring the entire car at the same time. of course there are significant small items that just wont work w/ the 289, those are listed in the FAQ section at the top of the classic mustang forum section. i give this post 2 more hours before you get bombarded with people telling you it's not worth it or whatever, but dont listen, just do it and enjoy. if you know what you're doing, it wont be a problem at all to do the swap.
It's not just the front suspension that has to be upgraded, it also requires a different differential. The 7.5 that comes with the 6 banger won't handle the V8 under stress. So, either an 8 inch or a 9 inch rear has to be installed. Plan ahead, and read the I6 to V8 swap information in the FAQ section.
