Default engine code

I'm not sure where the engine in my mustang came from. Where is the code usually stamped?

I am not sure what you are looking for? Are you looking for what engine came in the car? Where the car was assembled?

I was looking for the number on the engine. I know that the engine that is currently in the car is not the original one

If you post the VIN code we can tell you what was supposed to be in the car. There is not really a good way to tell if that is the exact engine that cam in the car.

Well, shouldn't there be a number on the block that identifies the engine...what I really need to know is if the 302 that is in the car is a BOSS 302 or not

If its a Boss it will have cleveland heads a high rise manifold cast aluminum or chrome valve covers it should also have a balancer that is about 3.5 inches wide. part numbers for the block are C9ze or D0ZE this number should be right above the starter cast into the block

Take the starter out, and the number will be stamped behind it on the block.

If your valve covers have six bolts, it's not a Boss. If they have eight, it could be a Boss or a Cleveland or a conversion.

The fifth letter in the VIN will tell you what it was originally equipped with, not what may be between the shock towers now. For someone who doesn't know the difference between a Boss and a standard 302 by sight, counting the valve cover bolts is the quickest way to tell. Hell, if someone checked the fifth number in my VIN, they would say my 390 was a 200ci straight six.
