Default Adjusting carburetor

Ok well I thought I had a exhaust leak cause I can smeel fumes in the cab but I took it to a place and they said it was just running really rich. It runs fine, and I can floor it and it doesnt bog at all and it starts up fine. But it does smoke alot. So What I am wondering if how do I adjust it. I have never worked on a carburetor before but I know that there are adjusting screws. Its a 2 barrel 289. So how do I do it? Is there a certain amoun of turns I back the screw out? And how do I know it adjusted properly?
thanks

Use a vacuum gage, turn idle mix screws in all the way (it might stumble a bit), turn screws out a half turn, then adjust them both until you have max vacuum.

what are u talking about???????[sm=WTFsgign.gif]

turn the mix screws all the way is (tell its snug not tight) then 2.5 times then adjust from there, it will mess with your idle so fix that to......

testing for maximum vacuum is the way to do it less you have an oxygen sensor jerry rigged to your headers. if turning the screws all the way in doesn't make your car stall out then your carb needs to be rebuilt or just slap on a good old holley dp
