I purchased a 390 for my truck a couple of years ago, and the engine builder said to wait until you have at least 10-12K miles on it. If you don't wait, the engine doesn't have enough time to "break-in". Changing to synthetic too early will prevent proper "break-in".

engines need break in time for the rings and flat tappet cams synthetic is super silck so must use convential for around the thousand miles then switch!roller cams need no break in

The break in on the rings is the most important thing... Without a proper break in, the rings wont seal right on the cylinder walls, because not enough metal was shaved to make it a perfect fit. Using synthetic during the initial break in prevents a lot more friction, and the rings never quite set in

Agreed however most gas engines only need 1500 miles to break in. A diesel needs 5000 miles.

Also, corvettes and vipers now come with synthetic and they don't have a break in period.

Definitely run synthetic. Just make sure that it is really synthetic. All oils that are LABLED synthetic are not. You redlines, mobil 1, oil like that are. Your pensoils, quaker states, shells are not regardless of what they are labled. I can explain further if anyone is interested.

Obviously by my signature I prefer Amsoil. I think redline, royal purple and Mobil 1 are fine.

The biggest thing is to use a lab created synthetic. There are many oils out there that say they are synthetic - shell, quaker state, etc that are just further filtered dyno oil.

http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2156.pdf Here is a white paper comparing multiple oils on the market.

I use synthetic is all my cars. I prefer Mobil 1 because it is easy to find.
