Hey My 68 has the 2.79 rear gear and I was wondering if putting in a 3.00 or 3.25 gear would put a lot of strain on the engine while I was on the interstate???? Would it be better to just leave the 2.79 gear and put the money into a locking differntial??? Thanks

3.25 would liven it up on the street without much highway penalty. 3.00 would not be noticable...

You can run lower gears with an AOD and still have decent gas mileage with no more strain on your engine. You engine should be able to handle lower gears anyway.

Hey thanks for the replys....an aod is out of my price range for now. I'm pretty well set on 3.25's then.

Just an FYI, if your going to go through all that work, go with a set of 3:55's. I just did mine and its fine on the highway as long as you keep it at 55 - 65 you're good.

Ok, Im sorry, but 55-65 on the highway is grandma speeds. IT'S A MUSTANG. I wouldn't do anything to it, that would cause that. I like to cruise the highway around 75-85.

I agree. If i'm on the interstate i'm going to be hittin 70-85 most all of the time so i prob wont go any further than 3.25.

This is for comfortable engine rpm. I want some more get up and go down low but I don't want to spin too many rpm while on the interstate doing 75.
