Default 289 Performance Package??

I'm thinking about installing a performace package like one from Edelbrock. What are some thoughts about this and Recommendations? I'm just looking to increase the compression to around 9.5 to 1 or so and get a little more kick in the rear feeling. Not looking for a big HP monster, just a nice growl.. Right now its stock with a Edelbrock performer intake and a Holly 600 (which I hate) carb..

Believe it or not, you've got too much carb. (I'm assuming you've got a 289 or 302, right?) You need no more than a 500 cfm carburetor - and even that's more than what Ford put on back in the day. The smaller carb will give you much more low-end torque (i.e. off the line performance).

Save a few headaches and switch over to an Edelbrock carb while you're at it.

If you are having carb problems i.e. to rich, bogging, etc. You might try this before investing in another carb, set your distributor advance curve for a 38 degree total at 2500 rpm and 10 to 12 degrees initial advance. Then check your power valve,if your engine has ever backfired through the carb you probobly blew out the diaphram. Be sure to replace it with one marked 10.5 to 12.5 unless your running a lumpy cam that pulls low vaccum(12 in. or less).Check the jets,a stock 1850 Holley( 600cfm ) is usually a little fat out of the box and going down 2 sizes should clear up your problem. (60 to 62 primary jets,63 to 64 secondary or equiv. metering plate)Finally,a modern pointless ignition like a MSD with a 6A box works wonders.

Hi Guys!! Ok, the rear I just finished rebuilding (my first one). I replaced all the bearing and seals including the axle bearings. The gears I installed are Richmond 3:55's and I also setup a Diff locker from Summit (PN PWT-1810-LR). I think its called Posi-Trax, it has no clutches. Its like a ratachet kind of setup.

As to the Carb, yep... I have had problems with backfires and it does bog at times. I plan on replacing the Carb with a Edelbrock soon and maybe a set of new heads from them too... I hate Holley, never thought they were any good...

Learning how to tune your Holley carb would be a whole lot less expensive than buying an Edelbrock carb.Holley carbs are used on practicaly every drag race car out there. Why,because they work well when properly adjusted.I have a pair of them on my Boss 429,and my son has a 600 on his 68 coupe with a 302 and 5 speed trans. Tune up kits are inexpensive ! http://www.1969boss429.com
