70 mach 1 scj
Hey guys I am a new guy to the board. I am currently restoring a 68/289 coupe; its comming along nicely, but very slow. I estimaste this projest will be done by summer, and hope to move on to another. The car I am inquiring about is a 1970 Mach 1 SCJ (WOW). A guy that I do business with bought it new in 1969 and blew up the motor while drag racing in 1975 with 45,000miles. The car still rest in his garage for the last 30 years in flawless condition but with the orginal motor sitting beside it in hundreds of pieces. I don't reallly know how special this car may be because the orginal owner wants $30,000 for the car and 2 other aditional motors. The car is a dark jade green with a 4 speed, no stripes and a shaker hood. The car is in almost perfect condition except for a small rust pin hole in the quarter panel. If someone know what this car may be worth and the production numbers, please let me know.
there were 40, 970 mach 1's produced in 1970. as for the engine i know one of the differences between the CJ and SCJ was the SCJ had a solid lifter cam. And yours is a 4 speed so i would assume its a pretty rare car.
Hi Smitty,
Value of course depends on condition & desirability, the market for those cars along with bosses doubled in the last year after remaining flat for the previous 15 years. The trend seems to be flattening again, but who knows. If the car is as you described, the asking price does not seem out of line, but no huge bargain either. Are you sure it's a super cobrajet? If so, the axle code will be a V or W & be equipped with an oil cooler, both horns located on the passenger side & different rotating mass from a regular cj. Are you sure it's the original block, does it have the vin stamped on the back of the driver's side head & is the date code correct? Can that block even be salvaged? Just a few things to consider. Btw, there were 1,620 R code ( 428CJ-4V Ram Air) 4 speed fastbacks made in 1970. Good luck!
