More performance?
Okay, my last post was about a Edlelbrock setup. Now, I would like some input from you guys. I have a stock 289 with a Holly 600 (I do get some back fireing at times which I think is due to a rich setup) with an Edelbrock Performer 289 intake. Thats about it..... I would like to up the horse power and torque.. I'm not looking to change out the cam right now but, if I have to I will.. Also trying to keep costs down. She runs fine and sound GREAT with the flowmasters. It just is not snappy at all.. I just did a total rebuild with the rear and set a posi with 3:55's..
What are some things I can do on the upper end to give it some more HP and that snappy throttle response????

If you have experianced backfire through your carb you will have blown out the power valve diaphragm. Replace it with a 10.5 or 12 power valve and install # 62 or 60 primary jets. When tuning ,start with the idle mixture screws 1 and 1/2 turns out as a baseline and idle speed should be about 800 to 850 rpm. Have your distributor set up for 38 degree total advance at 2500 rpm with initial advance set at 10 to 12 degrees. These settings have always worked well on my 289's .
Boss9 is right, that is where I would start. Getting the thing tuned properly should be first on the list. A recurve kit for the distributor, and making sure that power valve is working right are great places to start.
When does it backfire? When its cold and you open the throttle fast, or when you are full throttle? Does it do it occasionally or all the time. IF its all the time and esepcially at full throttle, you probably have an intake gasket leak, where the air is getting past the intake. Some gaskets arent so great and will leak. I chased that particular demon on a couple cars. If its backfiring when you open the throttle when its warm, you possibly have timing issues. I never had a Ford backfire through the carb with the timing set right, mopar is another story all together.. cold blooded they are.

Well, I took the plunge.. I never liked holly anyway, purchased a NEW Edelbrock 500 and it should be here by the end of the week. Oh, and I also just found out my 289 is a 302!!
Another thing you can do is a set of underdrive pulleys. I've had a lot of people tell me that it helps throttle response.
yeah, but it also can overheat the car, and you can loose your charging abilities.
