Default 4speed VS 5speed

Im fixing to convert my 65 from a auto to a manual trans. Had planned on using a 4speed toploader, but someone just tried to convince me on using a T-5 ( 5 speed ) tranny.

What would you do, and why?

I would use the toploader 4 speed. Because it is more original then the T5.

the thing about a toploader stock they handle a ton of torque but the t-5s i dont think can handle over 350 stock and just think home many old bigblocks years ago that had well over 400 ftlbs behind them.

I've got a 5 speed in my 67 and its ok. It's nice to have an overdrive for cruising plus you can run more rear end gear. Some of the bad points is an uncomfortable shifter position and low torque rating. There are a lot of conversion kits out there if you were gonna do it. good luck!

yeah most 65's dont have a big block in them. I would go for the T5 or better yet a TKO, the overdrive is a nice addition. Since you have an auto, originality isnt a big concern. You can run a 3.55-4.11 gear with an overdrive and still get decent mileage, not buz the engine so hard on the highway. Change the ball so it has a 4 speed pattern if you want it to look more original.

I would go with the 5 speed, I am doing just that on two of my project cars. The 70 GTO is getting a TKO600 because I dont like the 3200 rpm cruise with the 3.42 gears. Its not a drag car, but the TKO will handle the 455 it has, and the 500+ftlbs. You would be fine with a T5 if you can get one from a 5.0

i plan on getting a T-5. My engine only puts out about 290 stock and by now its decreased to something horrible. When I finish the rebuild it will only be up to like 350hp at most anyway with the new goodies. And from what I've heard a 5 speed is more fuel efficient but I guess it really depends on how you drive.

I believe attaching the clutch assembly is the hardest part.

Actually I have a the pedals and a bracket off of another mustang. Pretty sure it all bolts on. I'll let you know.
