Default Upper Control Arm Mod

Hey all, new here. I have a 1967 coupe(v8). A buddy and I recently acquired a Lincoln Continental that we're gonna part out with 16" wheels and decided to put the wheels on my coupe cause it had ugly 14" steel wheels. Rears fit fine but the front wheels hit the upper control arms.

Soooo.... Last night we decided to cut off the top corner/dust cover of the upper control arm with a grinding wheel (no, we didn't cut into the ball joint and yes I will be replacing them eventually cause they're shot.). Now we got the wheel on and it just fits and looks cool.

My question is, does this affect the strength of the control arm? We left the enough structure that we think it'll be fine and we'll cover it with tin and weld the tin on to cover the ball joint. It was full of dirt anyways and I don't see how the top corner gives the thing any strength/support.

Thanks!
