Default 351w alternator trouble

HELLO!!

I have a 1969 GT fastback with a 351w. i am having a hard time tracking down a problem. I cant get the alternator to charge the battery. I have replaced the alternator and voltage regulator. Today I put in a new main wire harness and alternator harness with all the proper connections but still cant get the alternator to charge battery. Am I missing something??? I dont know if the voltage regulator or the alternator may have gone bad but they are both pretty new within in last six months..HELP!!!! please..........

are you relying on the gauge to determine whether or not it is charging....or did you put a voltmeter on the battery terminals with the engine running?

oh yeah, and welcome to mustangforums.

Maybe you ought to just get a 1 wire alternator.

First it sounds like the regulator is not doing the job. You can verify if the alternator is doing anything at all. Start the car then dissconnet the battery. The car should still run if not, the alternator is not putting out any voltage.

keep im mind also, that in order for the alternator to charge your battery, it must be driven at a certain rpm for the alternator charge the battery it Are you just letting it idle, or are you driving it? My suggestion is to take it on the highway for a delicate few, and than bring her home, shut it off for awhile, and try it again.
