Vacuum Adance issue?
I just had my 1970 302 bored .030 over, put on a pertronix ignitor II ignition, Edelbrock Performer 289 Intake, Performer Cam, Edelbrock 600cfm carb. After setting the adjustments on the carb so it would run right, I checked the timing. I set it @ 8btc w/ no vacuum because that's where it ran the best and is within the 6-12 degree range for a 70. When I hooked up the Vacuum advance canister hose, It advanced to 25 btc. Isn't it supposed to be 12-16? Should I try to adjust the canister? I am getting vacuum from the appropriate port on the carb. What do you guys think?
My car would advance - not sure how far - but it would advance and then start pinging. I tried everything. The only thing that fixed it was fuel additive. I was on the Hot Rod power tour and I talked to Vic Edelbrock. He said to cap off the advance and see how she ran. That fixed it. She ran smooth. I then put a MSD distributor with just mechanical advance.
The engine was bored, running 11:1 compression MSD 6A, PeTronix. It has 70 closed port heads, Edlebrock intake manifold and Perfromer Carb.

Thanks for all the input... I did find the problem though. I hooked up a vacuum guage and I was only pulling 10 Hg. Should be 15-20. Vacuum leak! I took an Acetylene torch (unlite) and turned on the gas to find the leak. Could not find any leak on the intake
[sm=bounceybounce.gif]manifold or carb base. Put the torch in the driverside barrel of the carb...increased about 400 rpm's. Put it in the passenger side, no change in rpms. Took the carb off, hit it on the side with a rubber mallet to shake the needle valve loose, strapped it back on, started and pulling 17.5 Hg. 800 rpm's @idle, put it into gear, 450-500 rpm's. Strapped the filter back on and took her for the maiden voyage of about 1 mile, she snorts!!! I'll probably be passing everything but a gas station now.
Thanks again,
Ed
