hey guys-

thanks for all your replies .... I spoke with the inspector and he was actaully pretty leanient ....he said he would give me as much time as I needed to move it but if they got on his case he would let me know. Although that gives me time to talk to some buddies to see if I can use their garages I would have much rather worked on it in my back yard where I can keep an eye on everything. If it was running I would have definetly kept it in my back yard and just got a portable garage unit. But since I have A LOT of work to do I might as well rent a garage where I can work on it with peace of mind.

Thank you

ORIGINAL: mustangdemon01

I've had my 67 mustang covered in the back yard for about 3 months and just recieved a residential notice saying that I cant have my car there. The notice says the vehicle cannot be stored in yard and a print out of the rules was added which states...

storage sale and repair prohibited

The storage of merchandise, sale of motor vehicles, storage of inoperable vehicles, or repair of vehicles are prohibited in required off street parking lots or areas.

I was wondering if any of you have had this situation and how you handled it? I mean its my property and I honestly dont see how the city can tell me what I can park in my back yard especially when it is covered and there is a fence around it! If any of you have knowlegde with this sort of thing please reply.
The text of your post and the text of the rules don't make any sense you need to contact the local magistrate for clarification.
Your backyard is not an off-street parking area. You are free to dig a whole and insert a car verticly into that hole with the **** end sticking 4 feet into the air in your backyard unless you have signed a community agreement that you would not. Most likely you are dealing with a neighbor who called a city office (or has a relative/friend there) and said "my neighbor has an old POS mustang that he is working on for several months. And made no specific mention that it was not parked on the street.

This is just one more reason I live in the country.

Something very simliar happened to my bro. Neighbor was an **** and thought he (my bro) had to many dogs. So he went to county office and got a notice sent out that there is a law restricting kennels/boarding in residential neighborhhods and caps # of dogs to 3. After countless arguements with the county clerks they requested a zoning changing to allow them to have their 4 dogs, had to get a petition signed by all other neighbors within x miles, needed a lawyer, etc. They went before the panel to plead their case requesting the zone change and the panel said "Why are you here".."because we want to keep our beloved pets"..."no,no that's not the issue, why are you here? You aren't running a kennel or boarding these are your pets, there is no law that says you can only have 3 pets"....and so after 3-4 months of heartache thinking they were going to have to give up one of the dogs...just like that...it went away....because some ARSEHOLE attempted through force of will to have a completely non-involved law or regulation force applied in a situation and the dumb morons punching the 38.5 hour clock in the county office can't read the laws properly.

Read the deed restrictions carefully. If there is no mention of where you can park cars, specifically in your own back yard, then your neighbor nor the city hasn't a leg to stand on. Instead of going through the expense of renting a storage place to work on it, try calling around to people like the local judge or magistrate to get a temporary order to cease and desist harrassment without cause.

I've read over them and they seem to be pretty tight in terms of a gap. I think if my car was running I would have had a fighting chance, but even if they let me keep it in the back yard I wouldn't be able to work on it. This thing is like 5 pages front and back with all the details of what is and isn't allowed. The inspector allowed me more time to move the vehicle and said that if his boss got on his case he would give me a call.

Then it sounds as if you up the famous creek without a paddle. Sorry bud.....See what is the cheapest storage unit that is near your house that will allow you to keep it there and work on it there.

You say you keep it covered. I'll bet you use one of those bright blue plastic tarps, don't you? Well, how about just switching to a camoflage one? No, it wouldn't make it invisible; but it wouldn't stand out like a construction sign either. Might be an inexpensive way out...
