Default Braking distance

As some of you may remember there have been several threads in the last month about brakes one was about stopping distance from 40mph another was how disk compare in braking time to drums.

Well today I did some test now that my disk brakes are fully run in, working correctly and properly configured.

My mustang has front 10" disk with stock rear drums.

the first test was stopping distance from 40mph: 15.5 yards or 46',6" (accuracy is +- 2 yards) (range finder used)

The second test was Porsche 944 vs mustang 40-0 stop
the Porsche has ~12" rotors all 4 wheels with abs and about an extra 200 or so pounds over the mustang. The stopping distance from 40-0 was equal to the mustang (+- 3 yards)

I just wish I had an all drum mustang to add to the test

Thats impressive. Porsche vs. mustang and they both got about the same distance. Interesting

The Porsche is rated at 720Hp worth of braking I know that at 40mph the mustang is getting equal to that and I would guess at higher speed it would still be close to that (im running semi metallic pads on the mustang)

I was pretty happy with the results.

P.S if anyone is willing to measure 40-0 stop distance with drum breaks all the way around let us know what you find.

Well, I have drums all around on my 65 Mustang, and it takes me about 52 miles to stop it at 40 MPH. Dang.....I gotta get me some disks up front.

i have drums on all 4....i don't generally have a problem stopping

i have learned however, that there is a very fine line between stopping quickly and skidding

Yeah, but unless you have ABS, disks will skid just as much as drums. There is no doubt that disks are better for stopping over drums, but with experience in driving with drums, and anticipating the stopping distances, they are quite safe. Heck, mine are over 40 years old with upgraded new shoes occasionally, and I have never had a wreck.
