strange engine problem
I've been having a strange problem since the last couple of weeks.
It's winter now so i dont drive my stang because of the bad weather.
Last week i tried to start her up again and i could not get her started again. The battery was dead.
After recharging the battery, she started from the first time and she purred like a tiger
Today, about a week and a half later, i started her up again en let her run for about 5-10 minutes in my garage. I moved her 5 feet and her engine started to struggle. She stalled.
Restarting her engine didn't work. I could see fuel going up to the carb so it must be lack of ignition / electrical power.
So i'm thinking its the battery again. But the strange thing is that she started real good 10min earlier.
1) Shouldn't the 5min run before at least kept my battery to the same operating level ?
2)I'm thinking the alternator might be broken. But how do you check this ?
Or are my conclusions wrong and are you guys thinking in an other direction?

That could be a lot of things.
Does it crank over? If yes then no the battery is fine.
To test alternator run a volt meter across the batter with the car off should be 12v start the car you should get 13-14v if still 12v then probably bad alternator.
To test for spark: remove the spark wire from the coil and place a screwdriver (metal part) above the coil neck crank the engine if lightning comes out and grabs the screwdriver then you got spark.
Start with this let me know what you find.

Yep the engine crangs but didnt start.
Just finished recharging the battery. Put the battery back in and she started again for the first time. Strange.
Why it stalles after 5 minutes when driving a little bit ... i dont know... could this be a malfunctioning / misconfigurated carburator ?

Okay we know its getting spark and the battery is working.
Can we say for sure that its not running out of fuel? When it dies can you see fuel in the fuel filter? After is dies take the air cleaner off and move the throttle linkage to full throttle (engine off of course) do you see fuel squirting from the accelerator pump jets into the carb ventures? Does it do it more than once? If yes probably not a fuel delivery problem
The alternator still could be bad a volt meter is the best test but you could try turning on the headlights and revving up the engine 1,500 rpm then idle back down. Do the lights change brightness? If yes then alternator is okay.
How old is the fuel? Is it yellow does it still smell like gas?
Try out those tests then let me know

Ok next evening ... she started perfect again and kept running fine ... until again i moved her 5 feet.
A big struggle and another stall. This time when i started her again ... nothing. No cranking, no starting motor turning ... nothing.
I opened up the hood and wiggled the wires a little bit of the battery, alternator, starting relay etc...
Got back into the car. Turned the ignition, starter motor ran, engine crancked but she wouldn't start anymore.
So i'm forgetting the dirt in fuel scenario and i'm beginning to think its a electrical problem. Bad wire or connection etc...
Is this a correct conclusion ?
Is it normal for the engine to struggle when the problem is electrical ? I guess it can be when there is not enough power to the coil. Right?
I noticed the black battery cable is in bad shape which goes from the battery to the headers.

It sounds as if you have a mulitude of problems. First, drain the fuel and replace it with fresh fuel. Then replace the battery cables. Take the starter and alternator to have them checked. In the states, we take them to any auto parts place. Once you get it running, check the timing, and re-set the points. Replace the points if burned. Take out the plugs and clean and gap them. Bottom line....you need a general tune-up.
I replaced the battery cables, recharged the battery ... nothing ... she's dead

She does not even crank anymore.
I tried tp turn on the headlights, which worked, but when i turned them of, all power was gone. I got out, and the rear tail lights were still burning ...
I no longer understand this problem. It seems like everything is failing at once. All these problems can't be caused by a busted wire near my dynamo right ?
I need help.

some other strange occurence:
interior light works just until i turn i turn on the headlights, all power is gone. for good.
could this have something to do with starting relay ?
