It refers to the venturis in the carburator. or barrels as you may have heard. The 4 barrels or venturis throw more gas into the engine, thus if not too much, you get more power.

i always thought 2V vs 4V was valving configuration of the valves in the heads. most cars are 2v engines. there are 4v 4.6L in the newer cobra mustangs and 3V engines in the '05's.

It's both. However, a 4 barrel carb doesn't necessarily throw more gas into the engine until you open the 3rd and 4th barrels. You can get just as much gas mileage with a 4v as you can with a 2v, and sometimes better if you stay off the floor with the gas pedal. Although 4v and 2v (valve) heads use the V to designate, whenever one refers to a 4v engine, they usually think of a 4 barrel (venturi) carbureted engine. A 4 valve head has 32 valves whereas a 2 valve head has only 16. Obviously, the 4V head breathes about 50% better.

Does that make the new Mustangs a 0 barrel since they are fuel injected?

I think we all did. And, the 5.0 and up engines are EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) so they don't have barrels as such.

Soaring... just noticed something.. 4 valve V8 engines have 32 valves, each head has 16 valves. 2 valve has 16 to the V8 and 8 to the head.. just a simple engrish typo bro... I think they knows what ya meant.. Just wanted to clarify
