The 289 is a short block engine from the 60's era. Long blocks start with the 400 numbers.
The 289.302.351W and 351C were all short blocks.

well i know 289 is a small block(short block), but ive grew up with ppl saying longblock meaning build engine with heads, timing, lifters, rods, rockers, oil pan..etc. so thats what imean when i say longblock not the engine size itself...sry 4 the mix up...but anyone know where to get one?

you wont find a 289 shortblock from any aftermarket suppliers, it will be a 302, if you want a 289 then look in yer local classifieds er somethin, maybe someone has one they wanna sell you.

Shortblock does mean no heads, intake, etc. Its only block, crank, rods, pistons, and sometimes the cam is included. Usually used when refering to reman engines, or when you have the bottom end done and still need to do the top, ie heads.

289's used a different crank and rods. Simply changing the rods doesnt change displacement. If you want the 289 displacement, you can get the crank and rods, buy 289 pistons put them in a 302 block, and you now have a 289. A 302 is just as good, offers a bit more stroke, and a few more cubes. Pretty much everything else will bolt right up to a 302. You can even swap in a 5.0L which after 86 had a roller cam and one piece rear main seal. They require a different balancer and flywheel/flexplate, but otherwise are a bolt in deal. Same motor mounts and accessory holes.
