Default fuel gauge question

I have a 68 coupe that has recently returned from the body shop where the fuel tank was removed for safety. Upon return, I filled tank with about 5 gallons but the fuel gauge shows EMPTY. Any suggestions on what may be the problem?

Sounds to me like the sending wire from the gauge to the sending unit has been disconnected or is broken or not grounded properly.

I believe the wires for the unit are on the front of the tank in the center bottom side.

Check them I bet one is hanging or something

I looked and only the area directly in the middle of the tank was where the fuel exits the tank. No wires could be located....am I looking in the wrong spot?

You gotta get way under the car and its not in the middle of the tank but rather the center as in center line (equal distance from left side and right side) and at the very front of the tank (nearest the driver seat) so front center.

And its also just one wire that connects right near the fuel pickup line.

Unless its totally different on a 68 vs 66.

Check again it outta be there

Okay I see that I sort of miss read your reply.

The sender wire should connect very close to the fuel pick up line. I think you are looking in the right spot.

Check to see if there is a little threaded stud looking thing about 1/4 to 1/2 inch tall right by the fuel pickup line. If so that is where the sending wire should connect to.

If its not there look up to the location where the tank meets the trunk frame there should be a wire loom or some holding device for that sending wire

Is it possible that the sending wire travels on the under the right side sill plate (passenger side) into the rear of the car? I have a wire that goes from under the dash and hooks into the courtesy light but also is long enough to probably reach the gas tank. It has a small connector at the end that looks like the picture. Is it possible that that is the wire I'm looking for?

Okay so I take it there is no wire connected to the sending unit?

Yes it is quite possible that wire does run a long the right side and that the wire you found is the right one. I can’t say for sure you can try it I think the worst that would happen would be a blown fuse.

Where was this wire when you found it? I’m trying to figure out why its so far dislocated from its original spot (seems to me the mechanic would just pull it off and let it hang right there)

It was bundled together when I got the car back from the body shop. It was bundled on the passenger floor. I traced it to the courtsey light but the rest of the wire seems to be a mystery.

Sounds about right...My sending wire travels from the sending unit to the passenger side of the trunk, goes across the inside of the trunk to driver side door sill. go ahead and plug it in. Turn the key to acc and see if the fuel gauge moves..get back with us on the results...
