Piston question (289)
Here's the deal right from Edelbrock Cylinder Heads for Small-Block Ford They say the the 2.02 heads need the notched pistions for valve clearance. I think the high compression pistions are the notched pistions and the one's with just a small pocket in them are the low compression.
I may be wrong but, this is the way I have always thought it to be. Input guys, input!!!

Well, to make a long story short, I did some looking in Summit Racing today and they have Trick Flows that say because of their valve position their 2.02's run with just about any piston. Cool, maybe I will go with the Trick Flows. If I do go to new heads I am going to go with stock ratio roller rockers from Crane. Just another gimmick, ha ha. Geez, I do like to spend my money on her ( the car, not the wife, lol) Don't let her read this!

Yep, I would have to agree.. I saw a set of AFR's on ebay about a week ago for $900... I almost bid on them, the wife would kill me!! I have spent $3000 in the last three months...

By the way, these look like the pistions I have in my 302, let me know how you make out...

Okay all you "gearheads" out there, here's one for you. When I rebuilt my original 289 (bored .040) I went to a local shop that sold Ford Motorcraft parts. I got these cast aluminum pistons for my rebuild. (See thumbnail) My question is this: I am considering eventually going to a set of Edelbrock heads and was wondering if the notches in these pistons are enough to run the oversize 2.02 intake valves? That is if looking at a pic is of any help. Or are these stock pistons and I will need the 1.90 Edelbrock heads? I'm ready for your feedback guys, fire away, I can take it.

Okay, I am convinced these are stock pistons. So if and when I do a head change I will probably take a hard look at the Trick Flows with 2.02 intake valves.
Back in my shop (the Super Bowl is over) doing what I like best...

In reply to tylerdru:
I'm in Gray (Jones County), about 12 miles northeast of Macon. Glad you think it is flawless, but believe me it has it's flaws. Got a number of "little issues" to discuss with the restoration shop that did the paint and body. Everything else has been done by me, lots to do - headliner, door glass/vent frames (anyone notice it has no vent windows, lol) and all the back interior pieces, fold down seat, etc. To busy once I got the engine running around Thanksgiving to do much but tinker with the motor and drive it around the neighborhood weather permitting.

I built my shop with a ten foot ceiling. Can't raise the lift to its highest setting, but does get me high enough to stand under it (I am 6' tall). To take the Mustang all the way up I would have needed an 11 foot ceiling, but for aesthetic reasons I didn't want the shop to be that high. The shop is 24'x30' and has an attic storage space that is 8' wide, 6' tall and 30' long. Plenty of room for all my "excess" parts. The lift is a four post made by AutoLifters of Wichita, KS. 8000 lb capacity. Also has detachable wheels so the lift can actually be moved, even with a car on it. I love it! Price? About $2300 plus some options and another $200 to ship from Wichita to Macon, GA.
