Default good replacement engine

ive got a 66 coupe with a 289 in it runs awsome and all that but i have a craving for horse power and i thought about putting on new cylinder heads new cam carb and intake to improve horse power but i figure with all that plus new exhuast ill still only be in around the 200 mark at the rear wheels and roughly the same torque so i was wondering on putting in another engine first build it up over time outa the car and then putting it in when i get the car painted all at once. so my question is what is a good engine that i could drop in and could make some good power out of more so torque then horse power, but im still only 18 so rare engines are kinda pricey to me. thnx

Im sure you heard of us talking about a 351. I would get a 351W if i were you, because, they can hit over 400 hp. You can find one in the junkyard easy. Or you can buy a Roush Performance crate engine, that has 430 hp, and costs about 9500.

If you put new aluminum heads, intake, carb, cam, and headers on, you will get much more than 200HP.

He was talking about 200 hp at the wheels. A stock 200 hp 289 will only be putting out around 140-150 with a automatic transmission. That means you got to have 250-260 hp to have 200 hp at the wheels.

all depends on how radical a cam, intake, heads, and carb you want. I know someone with a 289 that puts 283HP to the rear wheels. .600 lift cam though

If pure torque is what you want, you need cubic inches. I love my 289, but for your needs you need to consider a 351 or a 302 with stroker kit to 347. You can get plenty of hp/torque out of a 289 with the proper mods, but I guess as the girls say, "Bigger is better".

Ford motorsport has 5.0 HO crate motors for about 3200. They put out 345hp at the flywheel.

ya im gunning for a 351 windsor putting on new cylinder heads cam carb and headers aswell as the 2.5 in duel exhuast i already have and i kow that a stock 4 barrel puts out about 290 at the flywheel so with the right tuning on the engine im gunning for 400 at teh flywheel then maybe toss in a t-5 and to top it off 4-11 gears in the back. with the windsor will the carlo bar that is used for the 289 mustangs fit?
