Absolutely! But are you building a 400+ hp monster with gobs of torque or a small block slightly modified. If power crazy, go 9" posi. Otherwise 8" posi works fine.

It is not so much the capability of holding more Rear wheel horsepower as it is to the different configurations. You can get open rears which is what most of the factory models come with for street/highway use, and you can get the lockers of different varities, depending if you want to take it off the street or out in the woods or on the strip. In addition to the open rears which only spin one rear tire, you have detroit lockers and limited slip rears. You have to decide which rear will be best for your application. A lot of guys on here swear by the 9 inch rears, and others will refute the necessity for adding that upgrade.

Yup - for sheer strength and renowned longevity, the 9" rear end is the best.

A quote from a recent Monthly Magazine: "Crawl underneath any stock car at a Nextel Cup race, and you will find the unbeatable Top Loader/9-inch combination."

If your building or plan on having a 289, 302 or whatever that is not going over 400hp the 8 inch upgraded will be all you need. I upgraded my 8 inch with all new bearings, 3:55's and a Richmond locker. This rear now will handle up to 400 hp and hit the strip all day.

I completely agree with you Slickman - an 8-incher is fine. I am running an 8" 3.25 Traction Loc and expect it to do me just fine ( I expect to get in the 300 hp zone by the time I am done with this car) A 9-incher is great but not needed by most of us...

Thanks.. Sometime down the road I plan on installing a OD unit on my C3.. I have the 3:55's in there and they are great for light to light and the strip (If I ever do that). I don't do much highway driving so, its not an issue but.... The OD unit is going to take care of that. It's nice to have a OD unit you can turn on and off. Still looking into other ways including setting up a AOD unit, I can get a rebuilt one for $500.. Time will tell.
