Default Transmission question

What happens if you overfill the transmission with fluid? is there lik an over fill tube? I ask this because we poured in about 5 1/2 quarts of fluid, and then it start leaking like crazy from some where on the driver side. It was not from the gasket. The dipstick said we had too much fluid in there.

There is usually a blow off valve to let extra fluid out of the trans. It still won't take it to the level it needs to be at though. It also makes a really big freaking mess. I'm sure you know all about that now!

You should still drain the fuild out until you get to the proper level. That means dropping one corner of the pan.

No i didnt check it running. Yes i know i need to take some out. HOw do you take one corner of the pan down? Last time it was stuck to the transmission so i just yanked it off and dealt with the mess.

Tyler, you have to check the tranny fluid when the car is running and warm. Take it out for some normal driving and bring it back, then check the fluid. The fluid expands when it gets warm.

After you run it in gear, and it still appears to be overfilled, you can take the tranny cooling line loose and drain some of it. Get a rubber hose that is about the size of the tranny cooling line and attach it with a clamp. Then run the fluid into a bucket. If you don't have a cooling line, then loosen one corner of the pan and let it drip. However, I doubt you have too much fluid in it. Take it around the block before you drain any.

That cooling line thing is a great idea. I had never thought of that.
