Default distributor replacement

I wanted to reuse the distributor from my 302 on my 351W, but when i put the oil pump drive shaft in I found out the shaft doesn't fit on the distributor. Can I replace the one part on the distributor or do I have to buy a new one? I've been looking at distributors online and have some questions about them. What does HEI mean?

High Energy Ignition

It's a good upgrade, more reliable and better performance. It also cleans up your engine bay. It's only two wires to hook it up.
I do get a kick outta people asking me where I got the GM distributor though...lol

The 289/302 distributor is not interchangable with the Windsor.

What's a good brand to get that will not break the bank?

How much extra HP are you running? The reason why I ask, is I have ruined a couple of shear pins on the stock distributor on my 351C. I recently added a MSD distributor. I will check the shear pin in a couple of months.

Not sure what kind of hp it wil make yet, but I'm thinking about 360-375. The old distributor was machanical, and I'm not sure if I should use the same type or a vaccum. I'm not really sure how the vaccum works or where it connect to. Somebody explain this to me

Pertronix makes a good one. I love mine.

Here is a quick writeup I did on my site.

This may be a dumb question but, what is the procedure for re-installing a distributor?
I will be pulling mine when I do my engine detail this spring. I intend to check my timing first and obviously keep the wires in the correct order. Is it #1 at TDC and the rotor pointing at #1 on the cap? With the piston up at TDC, how do you tell if it is firing or exhaust stroke?
Thanks for any info.

Well, If the rotor is pointing at #1 on the cap, then #1 is at TDC on the firing stroke. If the rotor is directly opposite #1, then #1 should be at TDC on the Exhaust Stroke. The rotor should turn at half the speed of the crankshaft.
