289 rebuild
I am proably going to have my 289 rebuilt this year. I will pull it myself but I dont know nothing about engines so I will have someone do it. Can I expect to get it done for 1500 maybe 2000 if I want to have a little power to it?
There is another post about just this subject if you do a search. However, getting a rebuild for $2000 and you not doing any of the work is a bit of a dream. To do just a basic rebuild will cost in parts alone about $1000 I think. So, to find someone to do the labor for $750 - 1000 is going to be very hard.
A basic rebuild with a few little mod's to up the HP a little will be more around $3500.. Just my 2 cents or maybe 10 cents..

Mine was rebuilt 3 yrs ago--stock rebuild kit and labor was just under $1900. That isn't counting new water pump, distributor, intake, carb, various other miscellaneous charges. Total with tax and everything was about $2500.
Mine is getting rebuilt right now, I called everyplace around here and the highest price I got was $1300. It's a a local shop and they are only charging me $950 for a complete stock rebuild and it comes with a 12 month warranty. Those prices a ridiculous. I know how to rebuild motor but I don't have the equipment, thats why I let someone else do it.
First, if they are just replacing parts and not doing any line boring or stuff like that you may get away with $2000. But, that in my mind is not a rebuild.. That's a get it running and sell it process. You want a good motor that will last and take the pounding that you may give it, then that takes money and not a cheep rebuild.
In my opinion, anyplace that's charging you under $3000 to do a rebuild, just walk away... If you're going to do it, do it right the first time.. My dollars worth of MY opinion...

I am having a 289 short block built right now... block cleaned, magnafluxed, line bore checked, rods reconditioned, crank checked and turned .010, block bored .030, all new bearings, new hyper-eutectic flat top notched pistons, rings. Rotating assembly balanced and the block drilled for water passages for Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads. Total for this short block with shipping to me: $1119.00 'Course I have new cam, timing gears, push rods, roller rockers, oil pump, fuel pump, intake, carb, heads, headers, oil pan and timing chain cover - it all adds up, but still way under $3500 - that is TOO much.
How is that way too much when your block alone cost you $1100 (which sounds like all the things you shold have done with a rebuild)?? A good set of heads are going to be another $1000 alone.. Remember, he is talking about someone doing this work for him
