Default How strong are the toploaders?

well ill be putting a toploader in my ranchero sometime and i was wondering how much torque they can handle. i have a 460 thats hopped up a little id say around 350-375 ft pounds right now and i have a big block toploader to put in there but i dont want to build my engine up later on and have to switch it out so how much torque do you think they can handle.

You can't get a better box than a Toploader. Many are 28 spline output shafts though (like mine) and for the big boys, look for a 31 spline. To quote Mustang Monthy's article on 4 speeds last month, "The Top Loader is as legendary as the 427 and the 9-inch rearend because it enjoys the respect that comes from being a virtually indestructable transmission. NAme the application and there's a Top Loader to fit it. Crawl under any stock car at a Nextel Cup race and you will find the unbeatable Top loader/9-inch combination."

My Boss has almost 600 ft lbs of torque and the stock top loader has no problems.http://www.1969boss429.com

Yeah I have read that the toploader/9" combination is the strongest and that is what most stock cars in nascar run for tranny/rear.

They're real popular trannys. A 4 speed car will as a general rule bring more money than a 3 speed or an auto. Top loaders also command premium prices at swap meets.

ahh thats good to hear. the tranny is going into a 76 ranchero so its almost inpossable to find parts for the swap so im making just about everything. i have pedals out of a 71mustang that i will modify to work in there and ill need a custom drive shaft and ill have to make all the linkage. i also have the 9" rear end too too bad its open but i can get a locker sometime.
