Help with chassis primer and paint...
StangDemon,
Red Oxide is the same color as the whole underside of Soaring's pic abov. Not sure if I would want red either.
Soaring, and all others,
I have the rear axle out for gears, posi, and a nice clean and paint. You pic has me thinking: do I want to sand blast the whole back tub? Paint it all up.
Hmmmmmm. This car is pretty nice, but more of a driver. Is it worth doing all of that work?
How long does that much work last with some miles and road grime etc? Do you have to take off every speck of original paint etc? I just don't know. I guess I need you guys to fire off opinions at me. At least I have a brand new tank already in.
Some guys at a local body shop offered to teach me to paint. That's cool.

If you don't care about a concours look, then you can use an etching primer and paint over that. Choose your color.......I believe the red oxide was used on the cars coming from the San Jose plant, but it really doesn't matter what color you choose if you are the only one concerned. Just don't put a coat of undercoating on it, as that stuff tends to trap moisture when it gets old and cracks. By using several coats of paint, the dirt and road grime will wash off easier.
Well im aiming for a black colored chassis...i assumed that the red oxide was a type of special primer that is also a rust inhibitor...im aiming for the best protection i can get so i never have to worry about rusty rails again. So you are saying i can get the same protection from a can of regular etching primer?
Thanks
Thanks
What you want to achieve is to cover the metal with a good coat of paint. Now, if there is still some rust issues, you will need to use a rust encapsulator first.....such as POR 15 as mentioned, then primer, then paint. That will stop any rust that is already there, and will give you protection from future rust with a good coating of paint. If you have perfectly clean metal without any rust issues, then a primer and several coats of paint will do. Black is good. Hell, I have even seen guys' undercarriages painted the same color as the body. Just as long as there is no bare metal showing.....that's your goal.
