Default Help with chassis primer and paint...

I need to buy some primer and paint for these frame rails i recently bought, I just dont know which kind to use and if it even matters if its a namebrand or not. Someone recommended Eastwood products, are there other products you would recommend? Are they cheaper/more expensive? Are these kinds of things the same or do the name brands have better quality? Thanks in advance.

If it were mine, I would get some red oxide from NPD for the primer. If you want added protection, then spray it with Krylon semi-flat spray from a rattle can.

I used Rustoleum Rusty Metal primer where necessary, then Duplicolor Red-Oxide, then Rustoleum Clear Coat. You can get the Duplicolor at Advance Auto and Discount Auto. Probably a few other local places like that too.

Would you guys recommend the same products for my rear axle and undercarriage? I am pulling the rear to swap in a set of gears and posi device. I want to put all parts back on a properly treated body section.

Also, are these brush, rattle, or paint gun products? I have a paint gun but not the guts to learn to use it on this car.............

Just make sure the undercarriage is spotlessly clean. You can use rattle cans. Here is what you want to shoot for.

Soaring,

Hahaaa, I have seen plenty of what to shoot for. So, are you telling me that pic is rattle can? If it is, wow. I am impressed. I would love to make it look that good, not sure how realistic that is though. I am not doing anywhere near as much work as MustangDemon01, but would like what I do to be equal to the quality of the rest of my car. I have seen some peoples work on here that is really nice brush on POR, Eastwood etc. Is that something that is easier or harder to do while laying upside down?

MD01, have any progress pics? I really dig your car and want to see more.

Any of you guys ever use the POR 15 fuel tank sealer? I have a tad of rust inside my tank that I need to get rid of, but am too lazy to take the tank out and use marbles, or pebbles or whatever.

Hey guys-

I decided to go out to NPD and buy the red oxide but I didnt know if the "red" meant that i would be painting the frame rails red? I want to have a black chassis and just wanted to know is there like a black oxide or something? i know, dumb question but i also was curious if this stuff is like a weld thru primer. Can I just spray the red oxide, drill the nessesary holes for the spot welds, then coat it with the semi-flat chassis paint? Thanks for your input in advance guys. Sorry I havent had much time to take pics yet.

soaring, from experience don't coat your tank. the coating will cause problems after a few years. new tanks don't cost that much, so just replace it.
