latching issue?

latching issue?
01 convertible.
Occasionally when I put the top up the top doesn't seen to come down as far as its supposed to.
The motor is obviously at its turn limit, you can tell by the noise it makes. But the top isn't coming down (or up in this case) enough for the latches to grab. And I cannot pull the top from the middle handle far enough fr the latches to grab.
I have to move the top up, down, up down a few times before it comes down far enough.
Any ideas what could be causing this?

A follow up to this. I noticed when my top is down, the top doesn't lay flush/even on both sides. The passenger side is sitting slightly higher than the drivers side.
Is this a sign of mis-alignment with the hardware? Is this something I should concern myself with?

My guess is that you need to add hydraulic fluid to the top motor. The ability of the motor to pump enough fluid when you put the top up and down, then up and down again suggests my hunch.
Remove the back seats both bottom and backrest. If there is a flap, pull it out of the way and you should see the motor sitting in a cradle on rubber mounts. Pull it up and out of the mounts until you can turn the motor somewhat upright.
Pull out the black rubber plug on the end of the motor with pliers (sometimes this is difficult) and pour some Dexron automatic transmission fluid (ATF) into the hole with a small funnel or cooking baster. Don't try to put very much in at a time. Put the plug back in and lay the motor down on top of the cradle (don't reinstall it back into the mounting holes).
Cycle the top up and down with the switch to see if it goes forward better. If you think you need more fluid, repeat. If you think you are done, put the motor over the mounting holes and use a phillips screwdriver to push the motor mounts back into the holes.
This is needed from time to time, but you might check and make sure the fluid isn't leaking too much out of the top of the hydraulic cylinders.
Good luck.
