Default Water repellant top dressing?

Is there some kind of convertible top dressing or silicon or something that can be applied to the top to make it more waterproof? I just bought an '08 that had a brand new top installed and there is a tiny leak at the edge over the driver's seat. I think the leak may be in the lower seam and I'd like to just rub some silicon or something like Nikwax into the seam. Would that be okay or would it mess up the top? Thanks.

Don

Can you see a tear, or light through the seam?

While I am thinking about it, you can place a patch on the inside of the top to seal the leak. If the leak is in a seam that may not be possible. A picture would be a lot of help on this one.
