Default Speedo and tach problem

I looking at a 90 GT but the speedo on the car reads faster than your really going(Reads 900 but feels like you're going 45-50) The guy says that when he changed the rear end gears it messed up the speedo, would the gears mess up the speedo and if so what can i do or buy to fix this. Also The tach constantly reads 2000 rpm but ounce in a while it will work, would this be caused by the gears? The guy also put on white faced gauges but i dont think that would mess the speedo or tach up. Thanks for any of your replies it is greatly apreciated.

ya the gear will mess up the speedo. there is a gear that you can buy to fix the problem and it goes on the end of the speedo cable into the tranny...but you have to know what type of gears he put in to correct the problem
