Hi guys, I'm in a bind. I could use some expert opinions. I got a scratch on my Cobra. The thing is it has a mystichrome paint job.
It looks like it's just on the surface, maybe through the clear coat. I cleaned the car but it is still there. I dont' know what did it and it's kind of like a funky upside down U about the length of my middle finger and the thickness of a credit card. The U itself I think I can just fit my thumb between.

Anyway, any waxes I should try to fill it in or anything you could recommend?

If not I guess I'll take it to a specialist. I don't wan't to have to repaint the whole rear quarter? Would I have to? Seems like that is something you can't just fill in.

I just got home and it's a little late and I'm about to hit the sack, but tomorrow I will get a pic up.

Today I wen't to a local body shop and they quoted me some rediculous figures. So I went to the the store and got Meguires Scratch X (I believe that's the name) and Mothers Reflections. It helped a little but it's still there. So after work tomorrow I will get a pic maybe someone may be able to help.

 

if you have to get it repainted its gonna be a pain to get the paint to match, hopefully it can be buffed out, take it to a body shop an see what they say, they can prolly get it out if not they can hide it pretty well an see if they can match the color....

 

So here is a pic. I couldn't get a straight on shot cause I would get the bright green and white blob in the center covering the scratch like you see at the top right (crappy camera). So I came at an angle and circled the scratch in paintshop because it is pretty faint. That Scratch X and wax did a good job but as you can see it's kind still there. Oh well I think that is good enough, I really don't want to paint it.

A good detailer could really help that one for alot less than a body shop. You'd be shocked at what a pro with a rotary buffer can do for you.

Hey- From the pic, although its a little hard to tell, it looks to be only within the clear-coat. My best advice, if you feel so inclined, is to
wet sand it out. You'll probably spend about 35-45 dollars in supplies, which im sure beats the prices of whatever the body shop gave you.

Supplies you'll need--

2000/ 2500/ 3000 grit wet/dry sandpaper--whichever you can find
A small hand sanding block
Fine Rubbing Compound
A good polishing wax or high glaze--that meguires in the black container is great!
Foam pad(s) for rubbing/ buffing.

First clean the scratch area really well with soap n water.
Next take a small clean container with mostly water and a bit of soap(helps with the wet sanding)
Wet sand the scratched area, keeping it as small as possible. Clean the "slag" off the paper as often as possible, and make sure you dont see any "color", it should only be white-ish water.
Dry the area, if the scratch still appears to be there, sand a little bit more.
Once the area is dry, use the rubbing compound with the foam in a circular motion. Do this repeatedly using a little compound every so often(do this for about 10 min).
Next, polish to a nice shiny finish---

Hopefully, the scratch isnt that deep and this will help. Good Luck

 

dude you cant even tell its there just have it detailed an buffed out....

 

I doesnt look bad. But it sure would bother me. I have a 2005 Mustang and after a year I do have a few smalll chips but no scratches. I have about 3 small knicks under my drivers side mirror. Ford dealer gave me the touch paint after I found a knick a few months ago. They never gave me a bottle when I bought the car so it didnt cost me anything. But I am always worried about applying touch up paint to a car. I dont want it to stick out. My wife has a 2002 Saturn SC2 and she has the drivers side door on the doors edge chipped since she bought it used from Saturn. So last night I finally got the touch up paint and did the touch up. Its not a perfect job but it did blend in pretty good.

But for a scratch like that, I would get it buffed out. A good detailer can gte it pretty close if not totally out.
I figure after owning my Stang for years down the road, I can always get my friend to repaint it or wet sand it and retopcoat it.
These new 2005/2006/2007 Mustangs have a very thin layer of clearcoat on them so you have to be careful.

 

just get some compound like wolfgang total swirl remover and try that if that doesn't work then get a paint chip repair kit
