Proper touch up techniques
Hey guys, I have a rock chip on the side of my stang I want to fix, a body shop I had my car at did a quick job on it while they were working on something else and just covered it up, but it really has no gloss or anything. I want to try and make this chip as unnoticeable as possible so whats the best method to do? I have Motorcraft touch up from the dealer, should I just hit it with that on top of the touch up already on there?
then should I wet sand it with like, 1200 grit? Or just compound it? Thanks in advance.

If it is a really big chip, and and you have to use paint. I would recommend you sand the area with a P500 grit paper, its available at most automotive paint shops, and it is NOT the same a usual 500 grit paper, or you can use a grey scotch bright pad. Wet sand the area you want to touch up, and use the paint code on your door jam to purchase a pint of paint. I would not bother to primer, you are only touching up what is there. Use a touch up gun and paint the area you are fixing, then clear coat the entire area. If you are painting above the trim, only clear coat above the trim. Do NOT paint the entire door, you will not get lucky enough to match the paint perfectly and you will see a difference if you paint edge to edge. If you just touch up, and clear coat the whole door, or above the trim, you will be able to feather out the paint so as not to see the difference. Remember to roll the edges of the tape up, around where you mask off so that you will be able to wet sand them down without much trouble. I know this is involved, but I am sometimes **** about my car, I want it to be right, and sometimes you have to fool the eye. Good luck. BTW, I hate the way the dob on touch up paint looks.
