Default Faded Laser Red Paint

Hi,

I have an old 1997 Mustang with the laser red paint....may not have done a good job waxing the car over the years to a point that the left side and the roof of the car which always faces the sun when parked at the driveway is very noticeabley much faded than the right side which is mostly in the shade.

is there any detailing method that can restore the deep laser red color to match the paint that still looks good?

I've clay barred and used paint cleaner and paint polish with very little improvement with color depth

thanks for any info!

Did you use a chemical polish or an abrassive polish. You might have to move up to a light abrassive to bring the paint back. In most cases when the car is oxidized, you can bring it back to its original finish. The best way to do this is with an orbital polisher like the Porter Cable. You can still get results by hand too.

The claybar really won't make an improvement with dept. It is just taking all the contaminants out of your paint.

i'm not sure if i used a chemical or abrassive polish it's the step 2 which I assume is a chemical polish in the meguire 3 step system which is 1) paint cleaner, 2) polish, 3) wax

what's the difference with chemical and an abrassive polish?

are paint cleaners considered as a polish?

it did a good job at reducing swirl marks tho i only have a single speed machine polisher/buffer which cost $30

thanks for the message with the products you suggested in the forums i will consider them

since we just bought a new saleen it made me want to restore the paint on the old 97 stang....LOL

Ok if it is from the 3 step kit it is a chemical polish. A chemical polish fixes oxidization chemically and doesn't have any abrassives in it. As far as abrassive polishes...they usually range from light, medium, to heavy abrassive. Rule of thumb is to always start with the least abrassive and if that doesn't work move up to the next abrassive.

Yes paint cleaner is basically a chemical polish. Your single speed polisher can fix very minor imperfections. It takes something with a lot more speed to fix medium to heavy swirls and oxidization. Like I said, I would try a light abrassive polish first and see what that does. Hope this helps!

I got some awesome products that will work on your new Saleen too!

Having owned a Lazer Red car before I can relate. Unfortunaly for some reason that color seems to fad worse than others and it is very difficult to bring back, it is also a very hard color to match on a repair. Try what Juztang said but I have a feeling it won't help much.

thanks for all the suggestion guys.....i've decided to take the car to a professional detailer and have them try one panel and see if the detailing route would bring the paint color back

if not will just save up for a cheap re-paint....LOL [&:]
