Some random detailing thoughts
I was getting ready to throw away an old clay bar when I read a suggestion on MF about using old clay bars on your windshield. I tried it and it really made it feel smooth. Any danger in doing this? I try to keep the blades and windshield as clean as possible, and I run the wipers a little slower than I should in the rain, because I want to minimize the long-term windshield damage from wipers.

I was reading in another forum about washing in cold weather. I always try to get a good coat of wax on the car before the bad weather sets in. We had a stretch of cold, snowy weather that lasted weeks, and so I kept the hose reel inside so it wouldn't freeze, then took advantage of a brief temperature climb above freezing to wash off the salt buildup. My neighbors probably thought I was crazy because it was only 2 deg. above freezing, it was raining, and there was more snow in the forecast. But the way I see things, it was a "maintenance" wash, preventing the crud buildup from bonding permanently with the clearcoat.

I figure if you can keep the wipers and windshield as clean as possible at all times (and replace wipers regularely), the windshield will show your efforts down the road. Same goes for the side windows. If you look at a car with a few years on it, youget verticalscratch lines from raising and lowering your windows through the dirty seals.
Has anyone had any success with RainX or any other product that repels water? Ideally, I'd prefer not to use my wipers at all.

Nice tips.
You can also use the old claybar to help remove small amounts of road tar.
If you have gotten all the major crud off the car, consider washing the car inside the garage.
