Default Cleaning the Engine???

After having my car for about 10 months without cleaning the engine its starting to look a little nasty under the hood. I've been wanting to clean it, but I'm a little scared to just take a hose to it because of all the electrical wires and stuff. What is the best way to keep the engine clean without messing anything up?

use my fail proof method.

Step 1: wash engine/engine bay with soapy water
Step 2: after that dries use son of a....gun on the plastic, rubber,etc..
Step 3: open beer. drink beer
Step 4: after you drink your beer, it should be dry and ready to drive...sober of course

So I guess my main question is "do you wet the whole engine down?"

Well i think as long as your conservative about it you should be fine. I mean I wouldnt take a hose to it, lol, but a little soap and water sure wont hurt. Damn my engine needs to be cleaned.
