what's the best product to do some spring cleaning under the hood?

Simple Green and water with a lot of towels handy. Finish up the CD-2 Engine Detailer.

It is ok to use water on the engine you just don't want to use a lot of pressure and try to avoid spraying directly on electrical parts.

I vote Simple Green or Purple Power (for really nasty stuff). Get some stiff plastic brushes to get into the tight spots.
