Car wash induced damage from the brush.
I rarely was mine by hand, I use a self serve "scratch and wash" as u say all the time. The secret is to find one with a Pre soak selection. Don't use the brush or if u absolutely have to, rinse it really well. I watched a company pickup froma local tool shop filled with metal shavings washing with the brush, wonder why cars get scratched? Pre soak---no brush, try it. Won't be perfect, but about 95% clean.
I have used a full service "tunnel" type car wash for 20+ years. NEVER an issue on any vehicle, but I am talking hi-tech stuff that evolves over time, not the Buff 'n Scratch at the local Stop 'n Rob. The wash I go to uses copious amounts of water and soaps to lift and carry the grime away along with very soft pads that move quite slowly. The car comes out looking show room new with nary a scratch. As I know all the management quite well I can't turn the hose on at home for what little they charge me for the full monty...
I would NEVER take a vehicle of mine through one of those gas station Buff 'n Scuff machines.[
